Things we should know about the “Influenza Season” also known as “flu” season. The timing of a flu is close to impossible to predict, it’s some what very unpredictable because the “flu” season varies in different parts of the country  and from season to season. The most common seasonal flu typically arrives between October and May. In parts of the world the common peaks of the flu season is around December and February.

image

It’s also very different to predict how/what the flu season will be like. The “FLU” season as mentioned before is very unpredictable in numerous ways. Flu season comes around every year, the flu spreads every year, but it’s very difficult to determine the timing, the severity and the duration of the season. Again, all these common factors varies from one year to another.

Some of the most common symptoms of the flu are:

People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills.
  • Cough.
  • Sore throat.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Muscle or body aches.
  • Headaches.
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

“What should we do to protect ourselves from the flu season”

There are many different options we are given to protect ourselves from the flu. One of the most common recommended yearly by our doctors, pharmacist and health officials is the “flu vaccine” . The vaccination is for everyone from 6 months and older, this has to be the first and foremost important step in protecting ourselves against the flu. Health officials announce it every year that we should start getting vaccinated as soon as the flu vaccine becomes available. Normally, these vaccines are ready and available by Mid-October and the best part now about these “flu vaccines” is that they’re “FREE” at least where I live in Canada. Also, they’re no longer  just available at the doctor’s office, these vaccines are readily available to be taken at many pharmacies, community health centers and flu clinics.

There are many other preventive things we can do to stay healthy and protected this flu season:

  • get your flu shot early
  • wash your hands often
  • avoid touching your eyes and face
  • do not share personal items such as drinking cups
  • cover your cough or sneeze
  • do the fist bump instead of shaking hands

These are facts and information that is readily always available to use through our local health centers, doctors office, pharmacy and the internet. I have also read up on many different factors relating to the “flu season”, “Influenza”, prevention, and also participated in classroom sessions learning about the prevention and protection. I believe that the number one protection and prevention starts at home. 🙂

Fruity Turmeric Smoothie

Fruity Turmeric Smoothie | Delicious Smoothie made with the goodness of Fresh Yellow & White Turmeric

image

Falls finally arrived, with all the leaves on the trees changing colors. The sun still shining bright with a light breeze in the air. With all these changes our body needs to start changing with the seasons also. We need to equip our immune system to start fighting the nasty winter colds, flu’s and all other viruses.

Fruity Turmeric Smoothie is exactly one of those drinks that’s power packed with all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and super foods that help the immune system fight. This smoothie has a great mix of assorted fruits, white and yellow turmeric, yogurt, honey and orange juice to give it that exact immune boosting energy.

image

Fresh Turmeric comes in two different varieties. First, is a very nice vibrant yellow/orange color which is also known as “lili haldi” in Gujarati. The second is a white turmeric also known as “amba haldi” in Gujarati which somewhat resembles ginger, but both of these turmeric are considered to be the world’s healthiest foods. These turmeric are used to help treat many chronic diseases and help relieve and cure the common cold. Turmeric is mostly found all over India and now it’s widely found in Indian, Chinese and some other Middle Eastern grocery stores, this particular root also known in other languages as:

AMBA HALDI is also known as Curcura Aromatica.
In Hindi…………AmaHaldi or Amba Haldi
In Marathi …….Ame Haldi
In Malayalam…Mannayinai
In Tamil………..Arukamleke
It is also called as Mango ginger.

image

Yellow and white turmeric can also be used for cooking, making pickle (achar), healing sick stomach aches, help remove skin bruises due to burns and help reduce the common cold.

My mom has always been big on haldi (turmeric), as a child I remember soon as we got sick with the common sneezing or cough she would make us a huge bowl of warm haldi (turmeric) and ghee (butter) milk and with absolutely no choice had to finish it up! 🙂  I have to say this, which I’ve never mentioned but will do so today after all these years …..But the honest truth is that I never admitted to her that her haldiwala milk always did the trick and relieved and soothed the cold and helped with the nasty hacky cough. Now as a parent myself I use the same tricks on my kids.

The perfect drink to start your day has got to be a nice tall glass of freshly blended Pineapple Pear Avocado and Orange Juice Smoothie. Nice ripe bosc pear , ripe avocado and frozen chunks of pineapple with a huge splash of orange juice all blended together into a nice smooth smoothie. What more do you want? A complete refreshing, tasty and healthy drink to energize your morning.

I love my morning tea the really Indian Chia, who doesn’t? 🙂 But, this week I had decided to change things up by starting my day with a nice glass of freshly made smoothie or juices. So far I’m enjoying it a lot. First, thing in the morning the body needs to be energized and I find that tea (chai) helps me wake up, but doesn’t always make me feel refreshed. With all the different smoothies that I’ve been making the body not only feels refreshed, but make me feel like the body is getting cleansed at the same time. A wonderful feeling! 🙂

Smoothies are a regular in my house, I pack a huge bottle everyday for my husband so he can enjoy that same freshness for an early morning snack or a great afternoon snack. After school, my kids get to enjoy the same great tasting smoothie. I honestly will share that some days some of the smoothies don’t taste the greatest due to the nature of the fruit or vegetable. We have learned to put all that bad vibe aside and have started just to enjoy the goodness of these smoothie. Yes! also my kids enjoy it a lot …sometimes to the point where their want more and more. Makes me feel good ! 🙂

Pineapple Pear Avocado and Orange Juice Smoothie is a super simple and totally healthy drink. It’s quick to make, but there is one little secret that I makes this smoothie super tasty. Be sure to use only ripe “Bosc Pear” and let your “Avocado” ripen up …not to the point where it turn dark brown inside, but till it’s nice and soft on the outer core, and green on the inside. I used frozen pineapple chunks in this recipe and avoided the ice cubes and added a huge amount of orange juice to balance out the sweetness. This smoothie is a bit sweet but more over to the tangier side and the color is a nice mellow yellow.

Be sure to try it out and let me know what you think. Also check out some of my other wonderful smoothies to start your day off; Mango Pineapple SmoothieKale Mango Berry SmoothieSummertime Mix Fruit Smoothie and lots more at Smoothie/Juices/Drinks.

Orange Banana Coco Milk Drink

Orange Banana Coconut Milk Drink

Orange Banana Coco Milk Drink is a refreshing creamy drink, bursting with Vitamin “C” and the goodness of bananas, strawberries and Coconut milk. It’s got a tangy taste from the fresh Orange Juice and strawberries and the sweetness from bananas and coconut milk.  This is one of my super immune boosting drinks, refreshing for the early morning start.

As a lot of already know that Oranges are packed with “Vitamin C”, but did you know that Coconut Milk also is an excellent source of “Vitamin C”. Coconuts come in many different form and colors. They have become so versatile now that you can find them in forms of Milk, water, cream, jelly and oil. Coconut has been used for many years in cooking and baking, but now it’s widely being used in making smoothies, drinks, coconut oil is also used for great head/hair massages or body massages.

image

Growing up I’ve always enjoy drinking fresh coconut water ….these coconuts are green and hard from the outside, but they are filled with absolutely sweet coconut water and jelly. Coconuts with the brown outer layer are also hard on the outside, but filled with fresh white flesh coconut inside which can be carved out and eaten as is or used in cooking ….great to make different kinds of chutneys. Brown coconuts come in different shapes …some are perfectly round and some have a small tail on the end ….a lot of times the ones with the tail are used for prays (pooja) or offering to God.

Smoothies seems to be targeted or marked only for the “health-conscious” people but, honestly I think it’s a drink that everyone should enjoy. Yes, a lot of people now-a-days add soya/almond milk, whey powder, flax-seeds or other herbal supplements to make it even more healthier or beneficial…… Consuming “Fruits and Vegetables” on a regular base is a benefit on its own !
