Things we should know about the “Influenza Season” also known as “flu” season. The timing of a flu is close to impossible to predict, it’s some what very unpredictable because the “flu” season varies in different parts of the country  and from season to season. The most common seasonal flu typically arrives between October and May. In parts of the world the common peaks of the flu season is around December and February.

image

It’s also very different to predict how/what the flu season will be like. The “FLU” season as mentioned before is very unpredictable in numerous ways. Flu season comes around every year, the flu spreads every year, but it’s very difficult to determine the timing, the severity and the duration of the season. Again, all these common factors varies from one year to another.

Some of the most common symptoms of the flu are:

People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills.
  • Cough.
  • Sore throat.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Muscle or body aches.
  • Headaches.
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

“What should we do to protect ourselves from the flu season”

There are many different options we are given to protect ourselves from the flu. One of the most common recommended yearly by our doctors, pharmacist and health officials is the “flu vaccine” . The vaccination is for everyone from 6 months and older, this has to be the first and foremost important step in protecting ourselves against the flu. Health officials announce it every year that we should start getting vaccinated as soon as the flu vaccine becomes available. Normally, these vaccines are ready and available by Mid-October and the best part now about these “flu vaccines” is that they’re “FREE” at least where I live in Canada. Also, they’re no longer  just available at the doctor’s office, these vaccines are readily available to be taken at many pharmacies, community health centers and flu clinics.

There are many other preventive things we can do to stay healthy and protected this flu season:

  • get your flu shot early
  • wash your hands often
  • avoid touching your eyes and face
  • do not share personal items such as drinking cups
  • cover your cough or sneeze
  • do the fist bump instead of shaking hands

These are facts and information that is readily always available to use through our local health centers, doctors office, pharmacy and the internet. I have also read up on many different factors relating to the “flu season”, “Influenza”, prevention, and also participated in classroom sessions learning about the prevention and protection. I believe that the number one protection and prevention starts at home. 🙂

Lassi….an absolutely refreshing and cool drink which is perfect for a hot summer day. I was thinking what should I make that’s refreshing and somewhat healthy for my little ones. Well ! that’s when I thought of this awesome combination drink “Strawberry Rose Lassi“. Easy and quick four step drink ready in less than 10 minutes.  So, join me and my little munchkin’s for a sweet refreshing drink ! 🙂

Summer is an awesome season, we have so many different fruits that are available to us either from the store or fresh right from the farm. I haven’t had the chance to go strawberry picking yet, but a couple of years ago with my husband and some friends we had enjoyed a very nice day at a farm picking Blueberries.

The great thing about a lot of these fruits is that we can get them fresh and have them available to us all year.  I like to get out to the local farms in my area and buy a larger quantity of some of the fresh fruits and clean, cut into chunks and freeze them. A lot of the smoothies, lassi, milkshakes and drinks tasty much better with frozen fruits. For this one I used fresh strawberries, since I had some hanging around in my fridge that needed to be used up right away!

Strawberry Rose Lassi, is a very smooth, creamy tasting drink. I used a Rose Syrup that I bought in our local Indian grocery store called “Kalvert Rose Syrup”. I like using this brand it doesn’t have a very strong rose essences smell or taste, but again you can use any rose syrup of your choice.

This easy and quick four step yogurt drink is ready in no more than 10 minutes. This is another one of my non-recipe drinks, there is no right way to follow. Just go with your liking and taste. All it takes is strawberries, yogurt, rose syrup, cold water into a blender and then into your favorite glass to enjoy !  My favorite glass for this drink is a traditional Stainless Steel  glass tumbler style which are widely used in every household in India. I use them in my house for this special drinks and to serve water to my guest.

Be sure to check out some of my other refreshing and cool drinks to enjoy in the summer time or any time: Mango Lassi, Mango Banana Milkshake, Strawberry Banana Milkshake, Mango Melody Smoothie, Orange Papaya Smoothie, Fruity Treasure Smoothieand Masala Chaas.

Fruity Treasure Smoothie –  Using Kesar Mangoes

image

This healthy delicious and easy Fruity Treasure Smoothie will help you start your day in a nutritious way. It’s made with the goodness of fresh Alphonso mangoes , Kesar Mangoes, peaches, pineapple, strawberries, coconut milk and honey the hidden treasures.

image

I also used another very famous mango called “Kesar Mango” in this smoothie. As described by “YumMangoes.in” “Kesar variety of mangoes are considered to be one of the best mangoes, which are famous for their fruit quality, attractiveness fruit and pulp colour, taste & good shelf life. Kesar mangoes are mostly grown in Gujarat, Western India. Kesar Mangoes are commonly known as the queen of Mangoes. This variety is slightly smaller in size as compared to the Alphonso mango variety but offers a unique taste.”

The best part of making this smoothie is that a lot of these fruits are in season right now, so it’s more affordable. Instead of using frozen you can opt out and use fresh fruits with even more of the goodness in the fruit. The more berries in our diet the healthier fibers and antioxidants we get. Mangoes, peaches and pineapple and coconut give it that tropical summer taste, few ingredients, but a worthwhile indulgences.

I like to add half coconut milk and half water to make the consistency a bit more liquid…that’s just the way me and family like it. This time I’ve used fresh fruits which I had previous washed and freeze.  I like to use frozen fruits cause I can make it right away by placing everything into the blender and enjoy it instantly ! Delicious cold Fruity Treasure Smoothie.

Fruity Green Tropical Smoothie

Fruity Green Smoothie

Yes….exactly the way it sounds. I know it sounds strange but believe me it taste great.  It’s got that tropical flavor twist in it and guess what it absolutely healthy. I usually like to follow the Simple Smoothie Formula so this way I have a balance in my portions and to add that additional boost to it I add either protein powder or flaxseeds, but I don’t use it daily I alternate days since it can be heavy on the stomach.

Simple Smoothie Formula

This is a super simple recipe so if your crunched for time then you can always prepare ahead of time and keep it overnight and grab it in the morning and go or prepare the greens, liquids and fruits overnight and quickly give it a blend in the morning. Either way it’s going to be super delicious and super simple.

I think smoothies taste the greatest when drinking them cold. My suggestion would be to use frozen ripe fruits so if you have fruits that have ripened up…..don’t throw them away instead throw them into a freezer bag and freeze it. This includes ripe banana also just peel them and put them into a freezer safe bag and freeze it. Obviously fresh fruits is the best way to go …..but ripe frozen fruits are good also. Why waste !!

Fruity Green Tropical Smoothie

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Serving Size: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Spinach
  • 2 cups Almond Milk
  • 2 cups Ripe mixed fruits (banana, strawberry, pineapple, peach and mango)
  • 1 Ripe Red Pear – peeled, deseeded and chopped into smaller pieces

Instructions

Into the blender add Spinach and Almond milk and blend into a paste or until greens all blended together.

Now add the ripe frozen fruits, Red pear and blend together till you reach a smooth consistency if you choose to make it a bit more liquid consistency than add more cold water to your preference.

Pour into your desired glass and Enjoy!

Notes

If you have an allergy to any of the fruits, or not a big fan of bananas? You can substitute any fruit with another other fruit of you choice.

If you are not using frozen fruits then you can add in a hand full of ice or cold water.

If you want you can substitute the Almond Milk for Soy or Yogurt.
